Join the Action: 2010 Environmental Congress

WNYEA_congress_4
This past weekend, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo (CFGB) hosted the 2010 WNY Environmental Congress at City Honors School in Buffalo. Although this was the fourth Environmental Congress for Western New York (WNY), this was the first Congress since April of 2009. Click here to learn more about past Environmental Congresses.

The 2010 Congress was attended by over 200 people from throughout Western New York. Urban Design Project from the University at Buffalo facilitated the program and the schedule included presentations by the Standing Committee for the Western New York Environmental Alliance (WNYEA) and by Cara Matteliano from the Community Foundation.  There were small group discusssions to revisit our regional Shared Agenda on the environment, and a keynote address on "Building a Movement" by author and climate change activist, Bill McKibben.

At the Congress, the WNYEA proudly celebrated our region's 2010 environmental accomplishments in a presentation on the shared accomplishments of organizations in WNY.  Here is the presentation courtesy WNYEA Standing Committee Member, Arthur Wheaton, from Cornell University ILR School and Western New York Apollo Alliance:

During the program, a crowd of college students also applauded the presentations and heard an announcement about the College Green Bowl, a contest in which three $3000 grants will be awarded to college student environmental projects in WNY.  The College Green Bowl will start accepting contest submissions on GrowWNY's facebook page on November 28, 2010.

  1. I would be interested in joining a task force concerned with identifying how the health of the environment has direct effects on human health. The combination of a polluted environment and a nutrient deficient food supply has had profound consequences on our health. All diseases are increasing and younger and younger people are being effected. We can not be healthy if the soil is polluted and lacking nutrients. Healthy soil makes for healthy plants which in turn supports a healthier population.
