It’s no secret GrowWNY.org loves to encourage outdoor activities, along with everything living green. Our Go Outside Map is a virtual map on our website that allows community members to find the perfect spot for the activity they love. But since you don’t always have access to our website, the Grow Team has decided to make a paper version. The map features 56 cool outdoor locations around Western New York and will be available at Wegman’s stores shortly. Each week the Grow Team will highlight one of these locations on our GrowWNY blog. As you prepare to take on the weekend, check the blog to learn about our Feature Friday Location and what we loved most about our visit there.
Up First: The Erie Basin Marina
When the hot summer sun comes out, the people of Western New York take every opportunity to soak up the Vitamin D they’ve been lacking all winter. What better place to catch some rays than on the waterfront? The Erie Basin Marina is a great place to take a stroll, a boat ride, or even just have an ice cream cone.
There is a sidewalk trail that leads around the waterfront, so you can enjoy a nice cooling breeze off the lake with your leisurely stroll. The trees lining the sidewalk also provide excellent shade when you need a quick break. And walking isn’t the only option; feel free to bring your bike down. There are bike paths to and in the Marina, and nearby is BFLO Harbor Kayak which you can rent a bike, kayak or stand-up paddleboard from.
Part of the Marina that you just have to walk through is the Trial Gardens. The sweet, flowery aroma almost makes you forget that you are so close to the lake. The gardens are set up to test the flowers in Buffalo’s climate conditions, and see which will work best for the beautification of the city. Each section is labeled so you can learn about what flowers are there, where they came from and where they might be going!
The Erie Basin Marina is also home to a variety of seafaring vessels. The Miss Buffalo, moondanceCat and Spirit of Buffalo, among others, dock here. Visitors also have the opportunity to buy a ticket and take a tour on these boats.
From the boats to the flowers, and everything in between, there is a lot to do and see at the Marina. Hop on a bus and head over to enjoy it yourself, or check the links below to see what the Grow Team saw on our walk through it!
