Why Walk?

Schmidt_walkingMichele, a self-proclaimed medium green, combines her enthusiasm for communicating about the green industry, with a deep appreciation for all things gardening.  Her blogs provide information from the homeowner’s perspective, moving between what works now and what the future might hold.

Recent guidelines say 10,000 steps per day or for the average person five miles is what people should be striving for when they walk. If reaching this goal on a daily basis is a challenge, find some reasons you should walk like I did and those five miles a day might not seem so daunting.

Consider the View

When walking take note of things around you. For years, I've walked past a house that sits hidden behind years, maybe decades, of twisted vines, overgrown shrubs and lonely daffodils and tulips poking up around the yard. A broken down Winnebago sits blocking a majority of a driveway that has gone from black top to black top pieces and stone. This feeds my fantasy that someday I could trade my ranch house on a busy main road for a quieter, secluded site with a great view. This is just one reason why I walk.

When you walk take notes on how your community is changing. Who has moved in, what house is for sale, what garden is blooming, who has painted their trim or is planting new grass. Catching up with neighbors or meeting familiar dogs marks time.

Your eyes and ears will be more in tune with nature when you walk outside. You will notice the birds, squirrels, and the dogs tied up or behind a fence who don't sound too nice. I bet you will breathe deeper, the fresh air will eases tensions, unravels knots and get rid of negativity.

Walk for Health

Walking anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes does the body good. It keeps your weight in check and muscles strong. Taking one step in front of the other doesn't require practice, and a nightly stroll improves your sleep. Your dog will also appreciate a stroll because everyone knows a tired dog is a good dog. A varied route keeps your dog aware of its surrounding and gives you something new to look at.

Help unravel perplexing questions, settle unruly emotions, uncover hidden possibilities, find inspiration and sooth the static that sometimes clogs our brains with walking. Talking a stroll with a friend can offer you a healthy way of catching up on the days events and make a walk go faster.

Expect walking to give you energy and make you feel good. It stirs up your blood with oxygen that you can only get outdoors. And when the sun is shining, count on it to give me my daily dose of vitamin D.

I walk because my happiness depends on it. Why do you walk?
