Clean Air Coalition Members on NPR's All Things Considered

UPDATED Friday, November 11: CLICK HERE to listen to the radio show on Tonawanda Coke on NPR's All Things Considered.

This past Monday, National Public Radio (NPR) launched a special news investigation called Poisoned Places: Toxic Air, Neglected Communities.

Poisoned Places will expose how the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Environmental Conservation's air pollution regulations still leave many communities exposed to dangerous toxics. Tonawanda is one of the communities NPR will feature. We’ve been working hard with reporters Elizabeth Shogrun and Sandra Bartlett to tell the story of our Tonawanda Coke campaign. The investigation documents how companies self-reporting, poor communication between regulators, corporate greed, and sometimes the laws themselves result in communities that are overburdened with pollution. As we've seen in Tonawanda, this has led to high levels of cancer, asthma and other illnesses.

Poisoned Places is part of NPR's regular news program, All Things Considered. All Things Considered is the most listened-to, afternoon drive time, news radio program in the country! Our piece will air on All Things Considered on 88.7 FM, Thursday, November 10, between 4 and 7 PM. The special on Tonawanda Coke will air at 4:00 or 5:00 pm sharp. We hope you can tune in!

EPA's Proposed Rule on Definiton of Solid Waste

Email Print PDF

This week, the Clean Air Coalition of Western New York commented on proposed new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) safeguards for hazardous secondary waste materials recycling, to protect public health and the environment.  The proposal modifies the EPA's 2008 Definition of Solid Waste rule, which revised regulations to encourage recycling of hazardous secondary waste materials.  The proposed rule, which was issued in response to a lawsuit brought by Earthjustice and the Sierra Club, still exempts recyclers from hazardous waste handling requirements, in many instances, but it promises to afford more federal oversight and industry accountability.

Back in August, Clean Air Coalition members in Tonawanda wrote letters commenting on this rule.  Concise comments were also created by the Clean Air Coalition Technical Advisory team.  CLICK HERE to read these comments.

VIDEO: Clean Air Coalition Rally at the Health Department

Did you miss our rally at the Department of Health?  This short film by our great friend Vince Mistretta shares all the best moments!

We rallied after being stonewalled by the Health Department after the fire at Niagara Lubricants.  Our voices were heard!  We secured a meeting to tell the Commissioner what we need from them to protect us when there are industrial fires in our neighborhoods.

On Wednesday, October 19th at 7pm the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is coming to Tonawanda to release data that has been collected over the last few years from the 2 continuous air monitors in Tonawanda.

This presentation is a result of the hard work of many Coalition members, and was promised to the community back in April when members met with Commissioner Joe Martens and senior DEC staff in Albany.  It is important that we have a large group from the the community to show the DEC that they need to continue to invest in Tonawanda, and ultimately in our health.  Join us to learn whats our air, the progress that's been made, and the work that's left to be done.

The presentation will take place at the Senior Center in the City of Tonawanda, 35 Main St. Tonawanda NY 14150.
