2013 BALLE Conference Scholarships Deadline Extended!

We are excited to announce that we currently have 4 scholarships available for application:

National Prosperity for All Scholarship Fund (open to North America and beyond) - NEW OPPORTUNITY!

BALLE is an equal opportunity organization, and yet we recognize that economic opportunity is not currently equal. BALLE set up this scholarship fund specifically to support the work of entrepreneurs and local economy leaders from communities currently underrepresented in the localism movement. Our intent is to hasten our shared work to build a more inclusive, just economy that supports real, lasting prosperity for all people.

Scholarship includes: A free registration to the BALLE main conference ($595 value), including conference programming and all meals and evening celebrations from Wednesday evening, June 12 - Friday evening, June 14, 2013.

Who should apply: Entrepreneurs and local economy leaders from communities currently underrepresented in the localism movement, including communities of color; low-income communities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons and their allies; and women-led organizations. We welcome applicants from the United States and Canada as our primary service areas, and from attendees in other countries.

Deadline: To be eligible, please complete and submit the application by 11:00 PM Pacific Time on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Buffalo Entrepreneurship Fund

Buffalo First! has created a fund to allow at least 17 entrepreneurs from the city of Buffalo to attend the 2013 BALLE Conference to explore how local ownership, social enterprise, and collaboration between businesses and communities can improve economic justice and generate real, lasting prosperity for all people.

Scholarship includes: A free registration to the BALLE main conference ($595 value), including conference programming and all meals and evening celebrations from Wednesday evening, June 12 - Friday evening, June 14, 2013.

Who should apply: Entrepreneurs from the city of Buffalo, NY from communities currently underrepresented in the localism movement, including communities of color, low-income communities, and women-led businesses.

Deadline: To be eligible, please complete and submit the application by 11:00 PM Eastern Time on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Western New York Local Economy Leaders Scholarship

The John R. Oishei Foundation has created a fund to allow at least 13 entrepreneurs and community network leaders from target regions of Western New York to attend the 2013 BALLE Conference, including Erie County and Niagara County, to explore how local ownership, social enterprise, and collaboration between businesses and communities can improve economic justice and generate real, lasting prosperity for all people.

Scholarship includes: A free registration to the BALLE main conference ($595 value), including conference programming and all meals and evening celebrations from Wednesday evening, June 12 - Friday evening, June 14, 2013.

Who should apply: Entrepreneurs and community network leaders from Western New York state, including Erie and Niagara Counties, from communities currently underrepresented in the localism movement, including communities of color, low-income communities, and women-led businesses.

Deadline: To be eligible, please complete and submit the application by 11:00 PM Eastern Time on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Western New York LGBTQ Local Economy Scholarship

Buffalo First! has created a fund to allow one LGBTQ business owner and one LGBTQ ally from Western New York to attend the 2013 BALLE Conference to explore how local ownership, social enterprise, and collaboration between businesses and communities can improve economic justice and generate real, lasting prosperity for all people. This scholarship funds supports the work of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons and their allies to build a more just, sustainable, and local living economy that supports all people and the planet.

Scholarship includes: A free registration to the BALLE main conference ($595 value), including conference programming and all meals and evening celebrations from Wednesday evening, June 12 - Friday evening, June 14, 2013.

Who should apply: LGBTQ business owners and allies in Western New York state, including Erie and Niagara Counties.

Deadline: To be eligible, please complete and submit the application by 11:00 PM Eastern Time on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Buffalo First Seeks Membership Coordinator

BF_large_logoBuffalo First is seeking a highly motivated person to serve as its Membership Coordinator. This is a part time, hourly position with performance-based bonuses. Responsibilities include maintaining membership database, recruiting new and renewing members, and providing service with regard to various programs offered to members. Both in-office administrative work and field work are required. Schedule is flexible: approximately 20 hours per week with possibility of expanding to full time salary w/ benefits within two years. Computer proficiency is a must; word processing, spreadsheets, Quickbooks, Saleforce, Google apps, email, etc. Must be organized, self disciplined, and possess superior sales and customer service skills. How can journalists tap into the activist community’s knowledge and expertise?

How can activists share their expertise with journalists to build a strong foundation for social change?

Please join us at 5:30 on October 11, 2012, for Act/Write, an event where local non-profit organizations can meet, mix, and discuss the intersection of activism and journalism in Western New York.  The event takes place at Sweetness 7 Cafe, 220 Grant St. in Buffalo.  This event is sponsored by Investigative Post, Buffalo First, and Partnership for the Public Good.

This event is free and open to the public. Flying Bison beer and snacks will be provided.
