bflo_first_teaching_by_exampleVolunteers are the backbone of most organizations; without a steady contribution of volunteer labor, many organizations would simply be unable to accomplish their missions. Thousands of people across Buffalo volunteer to clean up neighborhoods, paint community centers, cook meals, make improvements to civic parks and stock food pantries—to name just a few. There are hundreds of other opportunities for individuals, students and companies to make an immediate impact. Volunteering is about contributing to our quality of life--either in the home or in the street.

Join Buffalo First! for a panel and workshop to discuss the importance of volunteerism to a better community and a better way to do business.  Click here for more information or to RSVP.

Panelists:

  • Karen A. Christie, Chief Human Resource & Community Engagement Officer, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County.  Karen also serves on the Western New York Service Learning Coalition Steering Committe.
  • Suzette O'Brien, Volunteer Services Coordinator United Way of Buffalo & Erie County
  • Adam Bartoszek from The ServiceCollaborative.  He is the Hands On Greater Buffalo Volunteer program Coordinator.

Since that time, we have seen the plans modified, but not entirely devoid of the prospect of a mega-retailer.  However, through good-faith negotiations, the Canalside Community Alliance has pushed the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. to think local first.

Come to the Buffalo First! kick-off bash for the holiday "Give Local A Chance" campaign.  The party will feature a Local Marketplace with some of Buffalo's favorite locally owned and operated businesses, vendors and artisans.  Community members will also have the opportunity to contribute to an ongoing public art project that supports beautification and revitalization efforts on Main Street.

The evening will also include a silent auction in which participants will have the chance to win prizes that will help them experience the city from a whole new perspective.  The list of items is diverse and ranges from pints at Ulrich's with Flying Bison's brewmaster Tim Herzog, to cooking lessons with Merge's Kate Elliott, and a tour of Buffalo hosted by one of its most ardent supporters, Newell Nussbaumer.
